Damaged Curls? Finally!

Hey everyone! So for the first time in my 34 years of life, I’ve finally managed to damage my curl pattern. Yep, I said it, and it’s damaged in the crown area, not even the ends. Go figure! So, here’s a little background, I’ve been getting a mild relaxer since the age of 11 or 12. However, I would only get a relaxer 2x a year just to tame my curly/wavy roots. Anyway, during the summers I would just do wash and go’s because who the hell is sitting under someone’s hot ass hair dryer? Not me! Even though the relaxer left me with a looser curl pattern, my hair wasn’t damaged.

Fast forward to my late 20’s when I was pregnant, I decided to stop once and for all with the relaxers and just go natural. During my pregnancy, my hair got so much longer, shinier and thicker. I didn’t even experience any shedding or thin edges after my pregnancy either. Four years later I decided to cut a lot of my hair off because I didn’t want to deal with it while I was in the academy. Not realizing that cut, helped my natural curls bounce back 100% and my hair grew back like weeds LOL. So my tresses continued to flourish. During the winter I would do wash and sets and from Memorial Weekend to Labor Day weekend, would be my wash and go’s.

Then, finally one day during this past winter season, I went to get my hair done and I was pressed for time, so I had to settle for a wash, blow out and flat iron. OMG, I was in and out the hair salon within an 1 hour or 1 hour and 15 minutes tops. I was so impressed with how sleek and shiny my hair was and how my time was cut in half as opposed to sitting under the hair dryer with rollers in my hair. (It was so annoying every time the hair dryer would stop, they would come over and say 15/20 more minutes, uggh I would be so pissed). So I got hooked to the blow outs and flat iron. The hair dresser would yell at me all the time and say you will mess up those beautiful curls. I didn’t listen even though I knew deep down inside I would experience some sort of heat damage. But I said to myself, “what the hell, I’ll just cut my ends off, I have no problem growing my hair back.” Well, this Memorial Day weekend, I reverted back to my wash and go’s and boy was I in for a surprise!!! My ends were perfect! Beautiful ringlets, moisturized and springy but my roots, ooooo child….straight as a pin! No amount of curl cream or scrunching could bounce this sucker back. I deep conditioned just to see if a little wave would peek through, but nooooooo, DEAD STRAIGHT! WOW, I’ve never experienced this. As I sat, staring into the mirror wondering what the hell happened, I remembered that every time they flat ironed my hair, the hair dresser would have to make multiple passes from the root to the middle of my hair because my hair was so damn curly. But, in the end, my curls got destroyed.

My hair as a whole isn’t quite damaged though. Meaning my hair is still thick, my hair isn’t falling out, I still have a lot of length but my poor curls are dead (on top LOL). So, I decided to check out a natural curly hair salon to get some education on my hair. I was told where my hair is damaged, I would just have to let it grow out. If not, they would have to shave my head HA. I decided to let it grow out. I did however, get a curly hair cut just to get some shape and lift. In the meantime, I’ll do protective styling (corn braids, twist outs, etc) and a lot of deep conditioning. I’ve learned my lesson. My challenge to myself is no heat for a year to see how well my hair reverts. My next hair cut is scheduled for September. I’m ready to embrace my natural curls even in the winter seasons. Be a part of this journey with me. My next post will be about hair products! Enjoy the pictures and comment below. Thanks for reading!
